Recognizing Play is where learning happens
Playful learning is a scientifically backed method of nurturing whole-child development. Play
enables cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth, through joyful and engaging
experiences. As a result, children gain better language acquisition, executive function, and
problem-solving, laying the foundation for lifelong learning.
Intergenerational play adds greater value by strengthening bonds between children and seniors,
enriching learning through shared experiences.
Play joyfully cultivates curiosity and allows all to explore their creativity and interests, while
also growing determination. The Audacious Foundation seeks to increase the opportunities for
play to be integrated into the County of Santa Barbara.

We partner with a variety of nonprofits that create opportunities for low-income children to have
access to intergenerational programming, and playful learning. We wish to build
curiosity and joy around learning
Intergenerational shared sites are intentionally designed programs that provide programming to multiple generations, aimed to foster meaningful connections. Both children and seniors receive life changing benefits from intentional interactions.
Mr. Rogers famously said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.” We know children spend just 20% of their waking hours in a classroom. The more we can make everyday places throughout our county infused with learning and play, the better. Through play, children discover what brings them joy. This gives them a path later in life when they experience life’s ups and downs, and prepares them for life.
